The Department of Transportation (DoT) has ordered six airlines to provide refunds to passengers. The refunds total more than $600 million among the airlines in question. The DoT also said it was considering penalties of $7.25 million for delays in providing refunds. The airline paid back $222 million in required refunds and is now facing a potential $2.2 million penalty from the department. US transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, said: "When a flight gets canceled, passengers seeking refunds should be paid back promptly.

Frontier Airlines leads the list of airlines targeted by the DOT, with the Denver-based carrier set to pay $222 million in refunds and an additional $2.2 million fine. “When a flight gets canceled, passengers seeking refunds should be paid back promptly," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, said in a statement. "Whenever that doesn’t happen, we will act to hold airlines accountable on behalf of American travelers and get passengers their money back. Those dismal rates are largely a consequence of the pandemic and the airlines pivoting to respond to travel restrictions and lockdowns. And as the pandemic waned, airlines were caught flat-footed by the soaring demand from travelers eager to get out of town.

WASHINGTON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. Transportation Department said Monday that six airlines were slapped with $7.25 million in penalties and agreed to issue $622 million in passenger refunds as the agency vows to aggressively enforce consumer protections. "It shouldn't take enforcement action from (USDOT) to get airlines to pay the funds that they're required to pay." Buttigieg said under the settlements ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines (ULCC.O) was required to pay $222 million in refunds and will pay a $2.2 million penalty, while Tata Group-owned Air India will pay $121.5 million in required refunds and a $1.4 million fine. State-owned TAP Portugal will issue $126.5 million in required refunds and pay a $1.1 million penalty, and Colombia's Avianca (AVT_p.CN) will pay $76.8 million in required refunds and pay a $750,000 penalty. El Al Israel Airlines (ELAL.TA) will issue $61.9 million in required refunds and pay a $900,000 penalty, and Mexico's Aeromexico (AEROMEX.MX) will pay $13.6 million in required refunds and a $900,000 fine.

The U.S. Department of Transportation on Monday said it has ordered Frontier Airlines and five foreign carriers to pay about $600 million in refunds to travelers whose flights were canceled or significantly changed by the airlines. Travelers are entitled to a refund when airlines cancel their flights, but many customers were offered vouchers when airlines slashed flights during the pandemic. Frontier Airlines has been required to pay $222 million in refunds, the Department of Transportation said Monday. "It shouldn't take an enforcement action from the U.S. Department of Transportation to get airlines to pay refunds that they're required to pay," Buttigieg said on a call with reporters Monday. DOT said those five airlines together had to pay just over $400 million in refunds.
